The first question you’re probably asking yourself is “what exactly is sulfur?” and that’s a great question! It is a mineral that is naturally occurring and is one of the most abundant ones in the body, behind calcium and phosphorus. It is required in the human body to properly synthesize proteins and enzymes, for joint health, metabolize amino acids, and for health of the hair, skin, and nails.
So What Does That Mean for Hair?
Your hair is built from a durable protein (keratin), which has a high sulfur content while helps maintain the shape of your hair. It also contributes to the strength, elasticity, and overall health of your hair.
Your hair will go through three phases over its lifecycle: growth, rest, shed. When you utilize sulfur in your hair care routine, you can lengthen the growing phase and see longer hair! Ways to Get the Benefits of Sulfur
There are three main ways that you can get the benefits from sulfur for your hair growth. The first is ingesting it, the second is through hair care products currently on the market, and the third is through making your own hair mixture.

- High-quality poultry and beef (we suggest grass-fed)
- Brussel Sprouts
Or there is always the option to take MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), which you can find at your local health store!
Make Your Own Hair Mixture
If you prefer to make your own mixture here are our two favorite oils to create:
- 1 tsp sulfur powder
- 1 cup of your favorite oil (coconut or castor is our preference)
- Optional: 10 drops of your favorite essential oils (we suggest lavender, peppermint, rosemary, tea tree, etc.)
Mix all ingredients together in an applicator bottle using a funnel to ensure you can get it all in the bottle. Give it a good shake and distribute it to your scalp. Be sure to not over saturate, just dab it on with the bottle at your roots. Massage into your scalp. You can choose to leave it on overnight, or rinse with your normal wash routine after 30 minutes. You can repeat daily if you’d like.
Option two is to gather the following ingredients:
- 1 tsp sulfur powder
- 2 oz extra virgin olive oil
- 4 oz jojoba oil
- 2 oz castor oil
- 4 drops peppermint essential oil
- 4 drops rosemary essential oil
Mix all the ingredients together in an applicator bottle, using a funnel as mentioned above. Shake up the oil, being mindful that the sulfur will not dissolve (you will need to shake before each use). Distribute the oil to your scalp, being sure to not over-saturate it. Massage into your scalp for one to two minutes, then leave overnight and rinse in the morning, or rinse after 30 minutes.
