Maui Moisture products are something you are more likely to have heard about if you have curly hair. Most people agree that it is very moisturizing for dry hair. However, there are some who say they had hair loss when using Maui Moisture shampoo.
So, does Maui Moisture cause hair loss? Yes, it can cause hair loss, but Maui shampoo is less likely to do so than other brands you may see.
If you are considering using one of Maui Moisture’s products, you’ll want to know why it is beneficial for some people’s hair growth while causing hair fall in other people.
About Maui Moisture
The Maui Moisture brand says it was inspired by tropical ingredients from islands like Maui. Therefore, the whole Maui Moisture line has a tropical theme. Additionally, Maui Moisture focuses on hair products, with their product line being meant for curly hair.
They even have a small blog on their site. Most of their articles talk about ingredients in the Maui Moisture product line and how these benefit both curly hair and straight hair.
Their Product Line
Most of their products come in sets of three. These sets include a shampoo, conditioner, and either a mist or hair styling cream. Maui Moisture products also include foam mousses, hair masks, and combing creams.

They also have Color Protection for color-treated hair, which features sea minerals.
However, some of their other products can are safe for colored hair. They are just not made specifically for it like the products with sea minerals are.
Beneficial Ingredients
The Maui Moisture shampoos have a number of natural ingredients, some of which are featured in almost all their products. Since people with a curly hair type need extra moisture, this hair care brand focuses on moisturizing ingredients.
Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe vera does a lot of things for your hair, as I go over in more depth here. Even by itself, it is a good choice for a hair loss treatment.
It is full of enzymes that can help repair your damaged hair, can stimulate new growth, can prevent fungal infections, and is also anti-inflammatory.
Castor Oil
Castor oil is thought to help encourage blood flow to your scalp, which is something many hair loss treatments use to encourage new hairs to grow.
This oil is able to moisturize hair, reduce dandruff, is anti-inflammatory, and does many other things to help you have healthier hair.
Panthenol
Panthenol, also known as Vitamin B-5, is included in many supplements. All the B vitamins are necessary for your hair, each one playing some role in the health of your hair and strengthening it.
Coconut
Maui Moisture products have two types of coconut parts in them. Some have either coconut oil or coconut water, with some having both. Coconut oil is good for all hair types and is also beneficial when taken internally.
Externally, a good coconut oil shampoo like the Maui Moisture option can help your hair by nourishing it, acting as an antifungal, and more.
Bamboo Fibers
The Maui Moisture Thicken & Restore is their main product that has bamboo in it. Bamboo fibers are starting to be used in hair loss masks, as the fibers can attach to your hair strands.
This makes your hair instantly seem thicker. Bamboo is also rich in silica, which is something your follicles use to build your hair.
Shea Butter
Shea does many things for your hair, some of the main things being that it seals in moisture, tames frizziness, hydrates, and can potentially help stimulate hair to grow.
Shea butter is also rich in fatty acids and is high in Vitamin E, which is great for any hair type. It is used in both skin and hair care products for these reasons.
Harmful Ingredients
Though Maui Moisture has no silicones or parabens, they do have many potentially harmful ingredients that can cause hair loss. They are far from being completely natural.
One fine line they use is their claim not to have any sulfated surfactants. It is worth pointing out that this is not the same as saying they are sulfate-free.
As with the beneficial ingredients, not all the harmful ones are found in all the Maui Moisture products. So, you’ll have to specifically examine the Maui Moisture you are considering using if you wish to know which ones it has.
DMDM Hydantoin
This preservative is not technically bad by itself. In fact, DMDM hydantoin can be beneficial, as it keeps bacteria from growing in your Maui shampoo.
However, it is a preservative because it releases small amounts of formaldehyde when it comes into contact with water. Formaldehyde is commonly known to be a carcinogen, which is a group of harsh chemicals known for causing cancer.
DMDM hydantoin is safely used by most people, but some users react to it with mild rashes and other signs of skin irritation.
Isopropyl Alcohol
This counteracts all the moisture in these products, as it is used to strip moisture from your hair. Even if this moisture is replaced, it is still damaging to your hair.
Sodium Hydroxide
This chemical is considered safe for consumers in small amounts, and it even has a couple of benefits. The reason why sodium hydroxide is only allowed to be used in small amounts, however, is that too much causes chemical burns on your skin.
Sodium hydroxide is a caustic substance that has more of an effect on sensitive skin. It can potentially cause inflammation, hives, redness, etc.
Steareth-20
Steareth-20 is most often used in skin and personal care products and is actually restricted in cosmetic products due to being harmful. A large amount of this chemical is contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane.
Both of these harsh chemicals are carcinogens, potentially causing cancer. It can also be extremely irritating to your skin.
The same is true of PPG-1 Trideceth-6, also found in these hair care products, which uses the same chemical process and also results in small amounts of ethylene and dioxane being made.
Can Maui Moisture Products Help Regrow Hair?
If you have dry hair, a moisturizing shampoo like the ones Maui Moisture offers can certainly help your hair regrow for more than one reason. Dryness leads to brittle hair, which causes breakage. This makes for thin hair that is dull and unhealthy.
Oils also protect damaged hair by forming a protective layer around your hair strands. This layer will also prevent tangles, preventing breakage because of them.
Many of the natural ingredients included help with healthy hair growth in some way. More than one is anti-inflammatory, such as the coconut oil, aloe, and castor oil that all their products have at least one of.
Since inflammation can play a large role in hair loss, putting a stop to it can allow your follicles to recover and start growing hair again.
How Does Maui Moisture Cause Hair Loss?
Does Maui Moisture cause hair loss may not be as important to you as to how it causes hair loss. Its harmful ingredients obviously cause hair loss, but there are a few ways they might do this.
Since these products are for curly hair types that don’t have enough moisture, they are not good for hair types that are already oily. Too much moisture is just as bad as not enough.
Too much oil can harm your hair follicles by causing seborrheic dermatitis, a condition caused by your scalp getting flaky and red as it tries to get rid of the excess moisture. This can seem incongruous since dandruff is most often thought to be caused by a dry scalp.
Also, oils can form buildup on your hair strands. This then needs to be washed off, which will be harder to do and require more shampoo, stripping your hair worse.
There is also the possibility that you will be allergic to one of the chemicals in the shampoo you use. This can both damage your hair and cause hair loss if it damages your follicles.
Of course, if you get cancer from the formaldehyde, the DMDM hydantoin makes, this can cause hair loss indirectly. Chemotherapy causes severe hair fall, after all.
Pros & Cons Of Maui Moisture Shampoo
Maui Moisture products are not nearly as likely to be drying to your hair as many other hair products. This, plus the natural ingredients found in the Maui shampoo options, make these better than the average shampoo products you’ll find on the shelf.
There are shampoos out there that are both better and worse. Better shampoos with no harsh chemicals in them tend to be far more expensive.
Maui Moisture products, though they have a few negative ingredients, aren’t nearly as full of chemicals as other hair products I’ve seen. They are a cruelty-free brand, vegan, and have a few other things going for them too.
They are also for sale at a comparative price as other shampoo brands that have more chemicals and are more likely to cause health issues.
On the other hand, I wasn’t able to see anything about them having a warranty or what their return policy is. Therefore, it’s entirely possible that they don’t have one.
Final Thoughts
While I personally wouldn’t use Maui Shampoo on my hair, this is partly because my hair is not curly. I do consider Maui shampoos to be a good option for people with curls who might be on a tight budget.
