There are two different ways that stress can do this. The first way that stress affects your hair is by triggering in small amounts the same hormones and enzymes that we get naturally in “fight or flight” situations.
One of these, called norepinephrine, causes your pigment producing cells in your hair follicles to use their pigmentation prematurely. This essentially makes them run out of color faster. Once these cells run out of color, they can’t make any more and the next time you grow a new hair there it will be gray.
The second way that stress affects your hair is by triggering a condition that is called telogen effluvium. This condition causes your hair to fall out much more quickly by staying in the stage of growth where your hair falls out much longer than usual.
This, in turn, also makes your gray a little faster since each time your hair falls out and then has to grow back it takes up some of your pigment. The more often this happens, the faster you will run out of pigment and your hair will be gray.
What Can Help Slow Down Graying Hair
Since a lack of vitamins can make you grow gray faster, it’s common sense that intaking a lot of these can help slow down your graying. You should eat foods that have high amounts of nutrients in them and you should also take vitamin supplements.
On top of that, doing cleanses for functions like your liver can help your body spend less energy on those things. This, in turn, will help your body be able to focus on caring for your hair. Exercise is also good since it gets your blood flowing.
Foods To Eat For Your Hair
While some foods are obviously unhealthy, it can be hard to tell what the best foods are for your hair to prevent graying. Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are a good place to start. These include things like nuts and fish.
For the B vitamins, you need to eat meats, eggs, and milk products and make sure that your stomach is acidic enough or you will not be able to properly absorb the B. These same eggs and milk products in addition to fish meats are also rich in vitamin D.

Some foods have catalase naturally in them such as broccoli, kale, cucumbers, radishes, and celery. Applying onion juice to your scalp has been said to increase the amount of catalase. Though, there have been no studies to prove this.
