One of the main categories for hair loss solutions is hair supplements. Hair supplements can be hit or miss depending on what your goal is. They often come with mixed reviews. Although there are a lot of choices when it comes to hair supplements available on Amazon, today our focus will be on a relatively new supplement.

It just recently became available on Amazon. It’s called Follicle Foundation, and is made by Prepare Your Hair.

What is Follicle Foundation?

Follicle Foundation is a supplement that claims to be help people suffering from hair loss. The serving size of Follicle Foundation is 4 pills per day. And, it’s recommended to take it twice a day.

One positive is that it’s vegan friendly. None of the ingredients are sourced from animals. The supplements are also contained in veggie capsules.

Follicle Foundation is aimed at people who are beginning to lose their hair. When you’re in the earlier stages of hair loss, your hair is becoming miniaturized.

This leads to hair turning from healthy terminal hair into small, thin, colorless vellus hair. Follicle Foundation claims that it can help revive those dying vellus hairs, and boost your scalp health.

Product Ingredients and How They Affect Hair

Follicle Foundation contains a blend of 18 different ingredients. Just like most other hair loss supplement on the market, it contains vitamins A, C, and E. It also contains a B-vitamin complex that includes biotin, niacin, riboflavin, folate, and pantothenic acid.

There’s no doubt these are  important vitamins that your body needs, but once again pretty much any hair supplement  will contain some combination of these. And, let’s not forget they don’t really have a huge impact on hair unless you are deficient, which is rare.

Where Follicle Foundation differentiates itself is with its key ingredients:

Zinc (50mg)

  • Zinc has been shown to act as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, meaning it stops the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which is the main contributor to male and female pattern hair loss. It also keeps the oil glands in the hair follicles working properly which helps hair maintain its natural shine.
  • Note: Taking more than 40mg of zinc a day may affect how much copper the body absorbs so be careful when supplementing with zinc

Selenium (150 mcg) and Iodine (Kelp) (150 mcg)

  • Both selenium and Iodine help regulate the thyroid. This is important because both an underactive and overactive thyroid can lead to hair loss. By helping correct thyroid hormone levels, they both help prevent and reverse hair loss due to thyroid issues.
  • Selenium also has antioxidant properties meaning it protects hair from damage caused by free radicals in the body. Taking 150 mcg of selenium ensures that you are not deficient, which has also been linked to hair loss.

Garlic Extract (900 mg)

Gotu Kola (500 mg)

  • Gotu kola has been shown to strengthen and open up the blood vessels which improves circulation. There is also some anecdotal evidence that taking gotu kola can help reduce the time that hair is in the telogen, or resting phase, therefore increasing the length that hair grows during the anagen (growth) phase.

Nettle Leaf Extract (400 mg)

Ashwagandha root (200 mg)

  • Although ashwagandhas main benefit does not directly affect your hair, it has been shown to reduce stress, which can sometimes be a big contributing factor to hair loss. By balancing endocrine hormones, stress and anxiety have been shown to be reduced significantly. This can lead to improved sleep, which may lead to improved hair growth.
  • A secondary benefit of ashwagandha is that it stimulates melanin production. Melanin is the pigmentation in the hair that gives it it’s color. This can be vital to someone who is re-growing hair and hair lots of vellus (small unpigmented) hair.

Grape Seed Extract (200 mg)

  • Instead of working to prevent free radicals from entering the body, instead grape seed actively removes those that are already present. It also is a natural sealant that keeps moisture in the hair and scalp locked in. This prevents dry scalp related issues like dandruff and can reduce inflammation.

Ginkgo Biloba (120 mg)

  • Ginkgo biloba is widely recognized as a vasodilator which means that it significantly increases circulation. This is gingko’s main benefit as increased circulation means that more oxygen and nutrients that hair uses to grow are reaching the scalp.

How Effective Is It For Hair Loss?

This depends entirely on what your goal is. If you are looking for a supplement that targets DHT and claims to stop pattern hair loss in its tracks, then Follicle Foundation is not for you.

While some of the ingredients do block DHT, Follicle Foundation is still a breath of fresh air for the hair loss supplement market. Most supplements are geared toward blocking DHT, (which is great, except to get the most effective solution you are better off taking a prescription DHT blocker like finasteride) or claim to revitalize current hair. Instead Follicle Foundation takes a unique approach by creating a formula that targets the various aspects of scalp health. That isn’t to say that it won’t help improve the current hair that you have as Follicle Foundation is directed towards people who still have vellus (miniaturized) hairs present and want to bring them back to life.

This is what sets Follicle Foundation apart from its competitors. Instead of claiming that their supplement is “the magic cure” to hair loss, Prepare Your Hair offers realistic expectations as well as a realistic approach to hair loss. The ingredients included have proven benefits for your scalp. They provide you with a “foundation”, hence the name. This foundation gets your scalp and hair into better shape, healthier condition, and provides  a base for other treatments. Things like minoxidil should be more effectively, or so they claim.

Prepare Your Hair, the brand behind Follicle Foundation, is another good reason to check out the supplement. Not only do they give users realistic expectations of results they can get from a supplement, but their approach towards hair loss in general is quite unique. They claim that by maintaining transparency about treatments and increasing peoples understanding of how hair loss works/how to treat it, that treatments will be more effective and you can expect better results. Often when you look at results from hair supplements they are below average, Follicle Foundation hopes to raise the bar with a unique knowledge/understanding-based approach as well as ingredients that target a different aspect of hair loss, the scalp.

The Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Prepare Your Hair offers a 90-day money back guarantee
  • It contains all natural ingredients and is vegan friendly
  • Works for both men and women with all hair types
  • Compared to some other hair loss solutions containing similar ingredients it is relatively affordable
  • Gives users realistic expectations and guidelines to follow
  • Takes a different/unique approach at combating hair loss

Cons:

  • It is new so there are no testimonials or reviews of the product
  • Its effectiveness isn’t proven
  • Ingredients do not target DHT specifically (although finasteride is more effective)
  • Only available on Amazon, not through the website
  • They say it can take 3 months to see results

How to use Follicle Foundation

Like stated earlier, the bottle is a once month supply containing 120 capsules, which means four a day. Take two in the morning and two in the evening. Just like with any supplement, you have to stay consistent to see results, so wait at least 3 months to determine whether or not it is working for you. Prepare Your Hair also highly recommends that you use Follicle Foundation along with other hair loss treatments to get the most out of the supplement. This makes sense. It’s marketed to provide a “foundation” (again hence the name) for other treatments to be more effective.
