Gray hair is something everyone has to start thinking about at some point, sometimes long before they’re ready. While most of us picture gray hair as something that will only happen as we get really old, the fact is that we can actually start getting gray hairs in our twenties.
However, we don’t have to just sit back and watch our hair slowly turn gray, nor do we have to dye our hair either. By first knowing why our hair starts turning gray, we can easily do things to delay this from happening.
In particular, a new product called Foligray can be a huge help with this problem. But we’ll take a look at that later and why it’s so helpful if you’re trying to keep the gray at bay.
First, let’s understand:
Why Your Hair Turns Gray
There are actually a couple of different factors that cause your hair to become gray. The first of these is often referred to as oxidation. Perhaps you’ve heard of the trick involving using hydrogen peroxide as a way of lightening your hair.
When you are young, you have a few enzymes that are called catalase, MSR A, and MSR B. The catalase breaks down the hydrogen peroxide that is in your body down into the water and oxygen that it is made from.
Meanwhile, the MSR A and B work together to repair any damage to your hair follicles that the hydrogen peroxide causes. As you get older, your body makes less of these three enzymes and this leads to your hair essentially being bleached white by the hydrogen peroxide.
The second things that you should know about hair is that the follicles are made up of two different types of cells. One type of cell makes the hair while the other type of cell (called melanocytes) controls the pigmentation of your hair by adding melanin, both working together to make your hair grow.
Eventually, these cells wear out. Our pigmentation cells tend to wear out first. Strands of hair naturally fall out and new hair grows back into its place in a cycle. Each time this cycle happens, there stands a chance that the new hair might lack its pigment.
These gray hairs also tend to be finer than the strands of your usual hair, since there is less going into the strand. However, if you pull out your gray hair then you will further damage your hair follicles. This will either make your hair feel rougher due to distorted follicles or it may not regrow a hair there at all.
What Can Cause Hair To Turn Gray Faster
When it comes to the reasons why your hair turns gray, the number one reason is simply normal aging. There is a rule of graying that you may have heard about and this is the 50-50-50 average. What this average means is that on average 50% of people have 50% gray hair when they reach the age of 50.
However, there are a few other factors that can cause graying to happen faster. While some of these aren’t things that you can do anything about, others are things that you can change if you want to.
This is one factor of aging that you cannot do anything about unfortunately. There are two parts of this that you should know about though. The first part is ethnicity, with Caucasians tending to gray faster than any of the others.
The second part of this requires you to know a little about your family tree. Some family lines simply are genetically predisposed to graying faster. While those are the two main genetic factors that go into graying, there is one thing left to mention: redheads seem to be particularly predisposed to gray early.
Vitamin And Mineral Deficiencies
There are certain vitamins and minerals that your body needs in order to make your hair. Some of these same nutrients are also needed to make your pigmentation for your hair to keep its color.
Vitamin B, in particular, is something you need for your hair and your pigmentation. This includes all of the B vitamins, but especially B-6 and B12. Vitamin E is a vitamin that helps your body make the catalase that it needs to deal with the hydrogen peroxide in your body.
Copper, iron, protein, and Vitamins A, C, and D are also important things that you should make sure you have enough of. If you are deficient in any of these vitamins, your body will first short your hair on them and give these to the more important organs and functions in your body that use them.
Health And Lifestyle
As we just went over, when your body is lacking the vitamins and minerals it needs, you’re far more likely to gray earlier. Therefore, it should be easy to see that if you aren’t eating the right foods in order to get these you will not have enough of them in your body to feed your hair.
When you get sick, especially if it is a serious illness of some kind, your body will naturally give priority to trying to get you better. This means that any nutrients you intake will be directed where your body deems they are needed most.
Considering this, your hair and nails are at the bottom of the list when there is anything more important to heal or repair. So, if you want the needed vitamins and minerals to make it to your hair, you have to not only make sure that you are getting enough but you also have to make sure that you are staying healthy.
Some sicknesses have symptoms that make you lose your hair. Finally, things like smoking and drinking take a toll on your system and cause your body to have to expend energy to heal your lungs and liver.
In fact, while it only makes a small amount, your liver is capable of making something called glutathione production. This enzyme helps to process the hydrogen peroxide in your body. Less hydrogen peroxide is a good thing to avoid graying and a healthier liver means that you will be able to make more of this enzyme to process it.
We’ve all heard at least once that stress can make you either lose your hair or cause your hair to gray. In actuality, this is entirely true on both counts. Stress can really make you lose your hair and it can make your hair gray faster.
There are two different ways that stress can do this. The first way that stress affects your hair is by triggering in small amounts the same hormones and enzymes that we get naturally in “fight or flight” situations.
One of these, called norepinephrine, causes your pigment producing cells in your hair follicles to use their pigmentation prematurely. This essentially makes them run out of color faster. Once these cells run out of color, they can’t make any more and the next time you grow a new hair there it will be gray.
The second way that stress affects your hair is by triggering a condition that is called telogen effluvium. This condition causes your hair to fall out much more quickly by staying in the stage of growth where your hair falls out much longer than usual.
This, in turn, also makes your gray a little faster since each time your hair falls out and then has to grow back it takes up some of your pigment. The more often this happens, the faster you will run out of pigment and your hair will be gray.
What Can Help Slow Down Graying Hair
Since a lack of vitamins can make you grow gray faster, it’s common sense that intaking a lot of these can help slow down your graying. You should eat foods that have high amounts of nutrients in them and you should also take vitamin supplements.
On top of that, doing cleanses for functions like your liver can help your body spend less energy on those things. This, in turn, will help your body be able to focus on caring for your hair. Exercise is also good since it gets your blood flowing.
Foods To Eat For Your Hair
While some foods are obviously unhealthy, it can be hard to tell what the best foods are for your hair to prevent graying. Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are a good place to start. These include things like nuts and fish.
For the B vitamins, you need to eat meats, eggs, and milk products and make sure that your stomach is acidic enough or you will not be able to properly absorb the B. These same eggs and milk products in addition to fish meats are also rich in vitamin D.
Meanwhile, fruits have high amounts of vitamin C. Whey protein has too many good things in it to mention here. I won’t go through the whole list of foods that have the vitamins you need for your hair, but foods can help your catalase production by being high in antioxidants too.
Some of these are ashwagandha, curcumin, saw palmetto, and an herb called ashwagandha in particular. This last food has been proven to protect your cells from being damaged by hydrogen peroxide.
Some foods have catalase naturally in them such as broccoli, kale, cucumbers, radishes, and celery. Applying onion juice to your scalp has been said to increase the amount of catalase. Though, there have been no studies to prove this.
